Six
years ago Rita helped a friend, who lost his dog by going to shelters
to find his pet. She was devastated, thinking of all those little
creatures whose futures were bleak, knowing they were doomed,
seeing the fear in their eyes. She knew then exactly what she
was meant to do. Establish a non-profit dog rescue organization.
Rita's Doberman Rescue.
While Rita rescues mostly Dobermans
she rescues other big dogs because they are the hardest to place.
"But most all of the dogs are Dobermans, that's where my
heart lies." says Rita.
She is also a foster mom for the local Humane Society for common
wild birds. She hand feeds them until they are ready to be released.
Some are injured and will stay with Rita for life.
Rita is very active in visiting
the local shelters every Saturday to notify various breed rescues
that one of theirs is in need of help.
Rita's advise to those who are
interested in helping animals: "Anyone that is dying to get
into rescue might try being a foster parent for any of the breeds
they feel endeared to. Heavens only knows, they could get hooked
and start their own rescue." Rita warns with a smile.
This year, Rita finally dug
up enough money to become legally non-profit, so that means any
donations are tax deductible.
Rita is truly dedicated. She
works two jobs to pay for all of the related expenses to feed
and care for these animals and still ends up with empty pockets
at times. "That's OK I wouldn't have it any other way. I
hit my pillow at night knowing I've saved one more life today.
It's amazing how petty all your own problems become when you are
helping others!" says Rita
